Frequently asked questions - Construction, Operation, and Traffic

We place great importance on keeping construction times as short as possible.

When driving by, you may not immediately see the full scope of a construction project.

In addition to visible work, such as asphalt paving, we also renovate hidden elements: our drainage system, electromechanical equipment, and more.

If a section contains many bridge structures, this automatically leads to longer construction times, as bridge renovations are more complex and demanding.

At the same time, we must consider other important factors:

  • Building materials often require specific conditions for proper installation.
  • Some tasks require a dry surface (e.g., markings).
  • Concrete needs sufficient time to cure to bear loads.
  • Certain tasks can only be completed in a specific sequence.

The competent authorities, in particular the police, are solely responsible for carrying out speed controls as well as sanctioning speed violations. As the road operator, we only perform supporting tasks, such as installing traffic signs or displaying speed information on electronic boards.

If you have received an anonymous penalty notice due to a speed violation, please contact the issuing authority directly.

ASFINAG stores video data only under specific conditions and in compliance with applicable data protection regulations.

Webcams in open areas only transmit live images without storing them. Recordings from rest areas may be stored for a maximum of 48 hours. Recordings from tunnels may be stored for up to 72 hours. The storage is solely for reconstructing safety-relevant incidents. It is ensured that neither license plates nor individuals are identifiable. Video data is only shared with competent authorities or the police and only in specific cases.

For safety reasons, we spread salt even when it may not seem absolutely necessary. We rely on precise weather forecasts provided by modern road weather information systems.

We prefer to use brine, a salt-water mixture, as it can be distributed more easily and evenly than coarse road salt. Even before the first snowfall, we apply brine because it forms a thin protective layer on the road, preventing snow and ice from adhering and reducing the risk of black ice.
Another advantage of brine is that it reduces the overall consumption of road salt, as it can be applied more precisely and efficiently.

With our black ice early warning systems, which monitor residual salt levels and temperature, we can deploy our spreading vehicles optimally—ensuring high levels of safety.

Our snowplows operate around the clock during appropriate weather conditions. On average, our routes are cleared every 90 to 120 minutes by our winter service. Whether you encounter a snowplow depends on chance, especially if it is operating on the opposite carriageway.
